Biography

Maj Gen Sandeep Sharma, AVSM, VSM, Ph D (Retd) was commissioned in the DOGRA Regiment in Dec 1982. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy Dehradun, the officer has excelled in all the Army Courses and was adjudged the best student in the Commando Course. He is a post-graduate in Defence & Strategic Studies from Madras University, Master of Management Studies from Osmania University and is a Doctorate in Defence & Strategic Studies. The officer was nominated by the Indian Army as an External Examiner in 2013 & 2014 to the Kenyatta University, Kenya.

The officer has had extensive operational experience in varied appointments which include Instructional tenures at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and Infantry School, Mhow, Military Observer & Military Public Information Officer in United Nations Iraq Kuwait Observation Mission, DAA & QMG of an Infantry Brigade, Colonel Quartermaster (Operations & Maintenance) of a new raising Command HQ, Colonel General Staff of an active Counter Insurgency Force and Deputy Commander of an Infantry Brigade. The officer commanded an Infantry Battalion in active Counter Insurgency Operations in the North East and Operation PARAKRAM, an Infantry Brigade on the active line of Control/High Altitude area in Kupwara (J&K). He was actively involved in the evolution and spearheading the project from Nov 2011 to Mar 2015 for raising the Indian National Defence University (INDU) which included the acquisition of land, the conduct of inauguration by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, preparation of INDU Act and Statutes. The officer commanded a Mountain Division deployed in active insurgency area of upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in North East. He was Additional Director General of Staff Duties at the Army HQ responsible for Coord Policy issues, selection, training, manning, equipping and deployment of UN Contingents, Military Observers and Staff Officers, conceptualizing, planning and supporting all UN Peace Keeping related training activity of all UN Peace Keepers from India and those from friendly countries across the globe.

The officer is a recipient of the Ati Vishist Seva Medal, Vishist Seva Medal, Chief of Air Staff Commendation and Army Commander Commendation twice and is a keen sportsman, outstanding long-distance swimmer and plays Squash, Tennis and Golf.
